Youth Program (K - 2nd Grade)

Youth Program Overview

The Mahtomedi Basketball Association offers an introduction to basketball for kindergarten – 2nd graders. There are two programs based on age:

Kindergarten Program

The kindergarten program takes place on six Saturday afternoons in January and February for one hour. Players will be placed onto small, co-ed teams led by a one to two volunteer parent coach. The sessions will include 30 minutes of practice following by a casual 3-on-3 half court game so they can try their new skills.

The fee for the kindergarten program includes a T-shirt. Each player should wear tennis shoes and bring a youth size basketball (27.5”) and water bottle.

First/Second Grade Program

First and second graders play in an eight-session Friday night league. Players are placed on teams combined by grade but divided by gender. The boys play in the upper Middle School gyms and the girls in the lower Middle School gyms. Teams may also play at Wildwood depending on space.  Two or three volunteer parent coaches will be assigned to each team.

All sessions consist of a 30 minute practice followed by a casual 40 minute 4-on-4 game led by the coaches. All players are given equal playing time.

Fridays:  75 minute sessions beginning at 5:45 or 6:00 each week (specific times by week will be available as the season begins)

January - March

Players are encouraged to attend the home varsity basketball games at the high school following their Friday night session.

The fee for the first/second grade program includes a T-shirt. Each player should wear tennis shoes and bring a youth size basketball (27.5”) and water bottle.
