Summer Program Opportunities

Small Group Summer Training

  • Open to MBA players who completed 3rd-8th grade in June 2021
  • Max 6 players per session
  • Groups by gender and grade
  • All training held at either Mahtomedi High School or Middle School

Training will NOT conflict with Newman/Zizzo basketball camps for the gender/grade

Similar to last summer - we will be offering “packages” of training sessions:

  • Each package will consist of 3 training sessions (1 session per week for 3 consecutive weeks, at the same day and time each week)
  • Each session will be about 1 hour in length
  • Each package will cost $50 (<$17 per session)

  • Package 1 - weeks of June 14, 21, 28
  • Package 2 - weeks of July 12, 19, 26
  • You can register for Package 1 or Package 2 or both

Days and Times:

  • GIRLS - MONDAY or WEDNESDAY mornings (between 9 am and Noon)
  • BOYS - TUESDAY or THURSDAY afternoons (between 1 pm and 5 pm)

In order to know how many groups to create per grade and gender, we need you to complete this survey if your child will register for training. This is NOT the registration - we will send out registration links in a few weeks after we have organized this information.

The survey will remain open until May 2.  We will then determine how many sessions per week to create per grade and gender and plan to open pre-registration May 10.

Registration link will be sent to families who complete this survey a few days prior to being posted on the website

You will register your child at that time for a specific day/time in either or both sessions

If you have multiple players who want to participate in summer training please complete the survey FOR EACH PLAYER.

  • Shots should be “game type” or “game speed” shots - take shots off the dribble, ball/pump fake - and really focus on using good form
  • ~10% of shots should be free throws
  • <25% should be layups (for younger players a higher percentage of shots made can and should be layups)
  • Warm up with some ball handling and form shooting
  • We will post some sample workouts and shooting drills to give you some ideas.
  • SHOT TRACKER form will also be posted on the MBA website before 5/3, and this MUST be filled out and signed by a parent/guardian and turned in before September 10th to be eligible

HAVE FUN with this over the summer!  Challenge your teammates and encourage all of them to participate!

2020 Summer Trainers

Marisa Gustafson - Marisa graduated from Mahtomedi High School in 2017, where she played as a varsity starter for five years. She is now in her sophomore year at Gustavus Adolphus College where she plays for the basketball team and is pursuing a Spanish education degree and a coaching minor.  This is Marisa’s fourth year working as a trainer for the Mahtomedi Basketball Association.   She has worked as a player coach for several summer basketball camps, and along with her dad, is currently coaching a spring/summer AAU team.

Mark Gustafson - Mark has been coaching/training basketball for over 30 years including several years with both the boys and girls varsity programs in Mahtomedi and with competitive AAU teams and youth traveling teams.  He served on the Mahtomedi Basketball Association board for 16 years.  As a lead trainer for the MBA the last three years, small group training has become one of Mark’s top priorities and favorite activities as it provides an opportunity to forget about the wins and losses and focus purely on skill development.

Nathan McGuire Nathan has been coaching high school basketball and training basketball players for over 20 years.  He has worked with youth his whole life  as elementary teacher and coach.  He has coached 4th grade traveling basketball all the way to varsity head coach at various high schools in the twin cities.  He has a passion for the game and love for developing future high school players.
