Youth Program (K - 2nd Grade)

Youth Program Overview

The Mahtomedi Basketball Association offers an introduction to basketball for K - 2nd graders.  Participants meet one night a week for a total of eight sessions on select Friday nights (Saturday morning for kindergarten) typically from 6-7 pm during the months of January through February/early March.

There are approximately eight players per team and sixteen players per full court.  In lieu of evaluations, the Youth Director and selected coaches create gender and grade level specific teams.

As mentioned above, there are eight 1-hour sessions.  The first three sessions provide an introduction to skills and how the game is played.  The last five sessions continue with an emphasis on skills development through competitions and scrimmages.  The scrimmages will be four on four.  Each player is provided a jersey at no additional cost.  Jerseys under this program may be kept by the players after the conclusion of the season.  Following each session, the participants are encouraged to attend the home varsity basketball game that evening.

With the goal of developing basketball players, the MBA has the following playing time philosophy for the Youth program: all Youth teams players will be given equal playing time.

Mission

The Youth Program mission is to develop and deliver a quality program where kids can have fun through sport participation; develop positive self-character and respect; learn skills and rules of the game; learn the value of sportsmanship and teamwork; develop friendships and sound attitudes about winning and losing.

The program helps young children learn and develop the skills of basketball, while emphasizing good sportsmanship, team play, and fun.

Player Eligibility

Participants must live within, or attend school (public or private) within, the geographic boundary of the Mahtomedi School District .

Due to gym space limitations, enrollment is limited.  Spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Once the program is filled to capacity, any additional registrations will be maintained on a waiting list in the event there are any cancellations. In the event of cancellations, the open spot must be allocated to individuals on the waiting list in the order of their registration - without exception. Youth Basketball Registration information will be available through our website and through the schools in Mahtomedi. Registration will begin in August and continue through November.

Coaching

Coaches are selected from all of the individuals that express an interest in coaching.  Basketball knowledge and experience is helpful but not of paramount importance.  Instead, the key characteristics of a successful youth basketball coach tend to be 1) a love of working with kids, 2) an interest in helping kids learn and grow, 3) a large dose of enthusiasm and 4) an interest in basketball.  In cases where we have an abundance of coach volunteers, we will have coaches work together and either co-coach teams or determine a head coach and assistant coach and work collaboratively in that manner.  At young ages, it is generally helpful to utilize as many coaches and "helpers" as available - as individual attention is a tremendous asset.
